Kennedy's

Jim's York Pub Guide

What's in a name? Perhaps you could have one to many in this bar, hop into your car with the ladyfriend, drive off a nearby bridge and leave her submerged in the river while you escape? Funny motto on the drinks menu too - "If you can't find love, find alcohol". I'll bet there are plenty that agree to the reverse - once you find love, lose alcohol. Better advice maybe.
Being a life long Kilmarnock FC fan, I liked the Kennedy's colour scheme of blue and white. Beech wooden floors, soft furnishings, newspaper racks and (relatively) low music give a somewhat serene feel to the bar, although perhaps that was the drink. You can probably imagine that there are no real ales, plenty of bottled beers, draught dispensed through chromed steel spigots, varied wine list and attractive young bar staff (wondering what a lonely loser like me is doing sitting at the bar, tapping into a Psion). I'd love to visit a place like this in twenty years time, as long as nothing had changed in the intervening period, just to see if it had acquired any character. All these new places are trying hard to create this missing ingredient, but I'm afraid it takes more than focus groups, market research and big white dining plates to do it.
