| Celebrating York's sea-faring tradition, I got the impression that this was a local alternative to the questionable delights of Micklegate just up the road. Okay, York races had been on, and there were the requisite number of punters with suits and badges looking depressed, but the were also OAP's, youngsters with pierced noses, joiners with bellies almost concealing their mobile 'phones and a few young blokes who looked like punk rock rejects. Someone put Boyzone repeatedly on the CD jukebox to annoy them, I think. The bar itself was exceedingly plain, the beer was tasty and cheap and if I was off to the turf, I'd pop in here to scan the newspaper first to choose my nags. Mind you, I've lived in York seven years and haven't been to the races yet, so I might not be back for a while! | |
