| Think "Slug and Lettuce". Think "Pitcher and Piano". Think "Theme bar for upmarket students who still think Friends is funny", and you'll be close to Varsity. One of York's newest bars, it's all green walls, white skirting and wood laminate floors, with quite a big bar to serve quite a big floorspace, and more room outside. They have thought of many potential customers, with Real Ale and Red Bull, two meals for a fiver, or one sandwich for not much less, a no-smoking area with comfy chairs, disabled access, Robbie Williams and Radiohead and The Monkees playing not too loud, not too quiet either. Yes, it's a focus group's idea of what a good place should be in the nineties, and therefore just misses on all counts. But it will keep me out of Harker's if they keep the beer on. | |||
