This pub, at the top of Micklegate, has
been refurbished in January 2002. I haven't yet visited, but as you can
tell from the older review that follows, it was badly in need of it!
I went into this pub following a journey up from London on the train -
it's quite near the station. It was just after eight on a Wednesday evening,
and I was the fourth person in the bar. It's a big place, a Greenalls
pub, with about one third being given over to a restaurant. I didn't eat
there, so I can't comment, but if you've eaten in one of these places.....
I can comment on the bar. Shabby. I sat on a wooden bar stool because
the cloth on the seat I originally chose was ripped. Other seats looked
as if people had wiped their feet on them. The walls had big patches of
plaster on them that hadn't been painted over. The whole place looked
dank, dingy and overused. Behind the bar, they displayed the badges of
many real ales that they'd obviously served in days of yore, or before
Greenalls bought it. They're not there now. Another sign read, "Banned
from one York pub, banned from all". On the basis of this place,
who would care?
