The Ackhorne

Jim's York Pub Guide

 The Ackhorne
This is one of my favourite pubs in York, but I'd lived here for about five years before I discovered it! Hidden away down a side-street, it's well worth seeking out, for the beer, for the cozy atmosphere and for the feeling that you could happily stay in here for, say, the next six hours reading the papers. The bar area is stacked with things to drink and eat, and the selection of ales changes on a regular basis. You can pick up a copy of the Ouse Boozer, or one or two independant publications on York's historic pubs to read once you've finished browsing The Sport. It can get busy quite quickly, because it's not the biggest of places and then the bar area can become quite packed. The low ceiling also means it can get quite smokey, although I tend to quite like the smell of cigs and beer so it doesn't bother me. In fact, after a few hours in here, very little does!
