| If you're coming into York on the A59 from the North, chances are this is the first pub you'll notice. It's hard to miss, dominating a corner of a busy road junction, but it took me a while to get 'round to visiting it. Inside it's nothing spectacular as it has been given the Steakhouse Makeover. You know the type - everything is wood and brass, the tables set out on split levels and in little partitions, and the pub sitting on the fence between being a family restaurant and a drinker's den. Resultantly, it feels like neither. On balance though, I think they rely more on the drinking fraternity as I often see them advertising events like Euro 2000, and they have other pub attractions like a pool table and barmaids with big hooters. There was also a small nest of locals grouped around the bar talking amongst themselves and furtively eyeing strangers like myself, wondering what I was doing scribbling in a little notebook. One pint was enough. | |||
