The Black Swan

Jim's York Pub Guide

The Black Swan

Chain pubs like Beefeater spend millions to emulate this type of pub, and still don't come close. Built in the 16th Century, check out the oak beams in this place, straining with the weight of centuries. It's been around long enough to have three ghosts, although on the Sunday night I popped in they should've been at the bar helping to make up the numbers. I drove up Micklegate later, and it's such a travesty to see a place like Merlins bursting at the seams while the Black Swan had five people in. It doesn't help that most people tend to drink through the back, meaning that when you walk past and look through the big windows, the pub looks totally deserted. So, get off the bleedin' Internet and get down there and have a pint. It will do you good.
