| I recently dropped into this old, low-ceilinged pub on the basis that I'd remembered it as being not to bad, given its proximity to the brain dead McMillans, Merlins and Brewer's Arms. I was disappointed. Although the original part of the pub has a cosy snug and memories of ye olde traditional English Inn in its layout, the extension they've added is a cross between a Beefeater Steak Pub and a double-glazing salesman's dream. A big conservatory looks out upon an uninspiring beer garden (although York has many such concrete gazebos attached to pubs) and it smelt of stale smoke, disinfectant and shattered romance (I think). It was quiet when I was in, and this was part of the problem, because last time I visited it was a Friday night and rather lively, so I gave it a better review. I wasn't the only one who noticed the silence, so the barmaid decided to rectify the situation by sticking on a tragic Ibiza Club CD and humped up the volume. Oh God. I sank my beer and left disheartened. | |
