Jim's York Pub Guide |
| A relatively new pub that looks as if it's been established for years, and also one that keeps quiet the fact that it is part of some sort of Brewery "chain", owned by Bass, I think. Very cozy inside, serving decent and different food to accompany a nice pint of Bass. The first thing that assails you as you enter is a lovely smell of wood smoke, more intense during the winter when they have real wood fires burning. The next thing you need to look for is the mismatched couples who are obviously conducting some sort of wretched affair in the neighboring Holiday Inn, and the younger, eager pairings of adolescents having their first "dirty weekend" in the same place. Or am I just some sort of over-imaginative perv? Finally, on the people spotting front, watch out for the schizophrenics visiting from a nearby locked ward, out on a daily pass, who stare sullenly and quietly at anyone glancing in their general direction. I kid you not. But I shouldn't knock one of my favourite York hostelries | ||
