The Golden Fleece

Jim's York Pub Guide

he Golden Fleece Picturesque, oldy worldy little pub in the town centre, with a golden ram hanging above the door. This is to celebrate the money once connected with the wool trade - ironically enough, the pub now faces onto the back door of M&S. You enter through a long hall that leads down to the main lounge bar which makes you feel you've finally escaped from the shopping madness of this area. En route, there's a small snug bar on the left that's always been closed when I've visited. Once an old coaching inn, The Golden Fleece stands the test of time by offering good beer, food and unpretentious surroundings and is worth a visit on boring Saturday afternoons when the wife is trying on her own Golden Fleeces (made in Malaysia) in the shop across the road.
