The Judge's Lodging

Jim's York Pub Guide

The Judge's Beer Garden
You're drinking in the Judge's Cellar, actually, unless you're in his garden. His house has been converted into a hotel and restaurant, neither of which have I visited. The bar is divided into three small, brick-walled, low-ceilinged rooms, with not a lot of space at the bar when it is busy. In the summer this is often the case, as it has one of the most popular beer gardens in York, out in front as opposed to through the back, and it can be difficult getting a plastic B&Q patio seat to sit on. This means it looks like a happening place though, and has the effect of attracting lots more passing trade, unless it is chucking it down. You might miss the entrance to the bar if you're not careful - it's the small door to the left as you approach the hotel. Looks like the tradesman's entrance, and probably was.

Bit of History - The Judge's Lodgings stands on the site of the burial ground of the old St Wilfrid's church, demolished in the second half of the 16th Century, and at one time the kitchen floor was paved with gravestones from the old church yard. In 1806 the the premises became the lodgings for the judges of the assize courts on their visits to the city, and continued in this for the next 73 years, eventually becoming an hotel. The bar now here didn't open until October 1979.
