After the battle of Worcester in 1651, King Charles II hid himself in an oak tree at Boscobel. In 1664 Royal Oak day was established on the King's birthday, and was popular for centuries. It could be inferred that this pub name reflected an affection for Royalty, so there won't be many in Dublin then!
