The Old Orleans

Jim's York Pub Guide

Old Orleans
More of a restaurant than a bar, this does attract people on the basis that it looks more like a bar than a restaurant. It caters quite well for the drinking fraternity, providing they're after cocktails. Beer drinkers should opt for a magical pint of Miller's - you'll never guess how the head vanishes so quickly without trace.
Food is generally good, being both varied and "Southern", in a kind of Anglicised way. Their Light Bites at lunch are also worth a try, although both menus verge towards the expensive. The last time I visited, the staff had tried to recreate the Mississippi in the Gent's toilet - commendable, but off putting in the middle of a meal. Seriously, I've been in this place a few times, and a visit to the Gents is only for the brave. If you're flush (pardon the pun), hungry and have wellies with you, the Old Orleans is worth a visit. Can be quite noisy at weekends, so if you're after a romantic candlelit dinner, avoid.
