The White Horse, Poppleton

Jim's York Pub Guide

The White Horse
Poppleton's biggest pub, catering as much for food as drink, and coming too close to being something like a Big Steak Pub for my liking. It's all a bit anonymous inside, with a large seating area in the back for eating in, and a very similar lounge bar in the front for having a pint. To be fair though, it was this pub that made me review my opinion of Bass beer, as I used to pop in when it was busy and the pints were flowing freely, making a scoop of the landlord's finest foaming ale something to write home about. They also have tables out front and in the garden, so you can enjoy a nice beer while overlooking the village green and wondering if the Maypole is some sort of giant fertility symbol, the seventeenth century version of a laser beam or a pretentious village statement. Answers on a postcard please.
