The York Arms

Jim's York Pub Guide

York Arms

Beneath the shadow of the Minster lurks the York Arms, a homely little pub that attracts an off-beat crowd of locals. Not that they'll bother you. There's two main lounge areas, and a tiny snug at the front of the pub, so you can take your pick. I'm pretty sure this place used to attract a predominantly gay clientelle, and it may still, but all this means is that the customers are more tolerant than most. It must also get loads of tourists because of its location, looking for alternative or additional spiritual sustenance. (see below).

History

This pub began life as a coffee house in 1860, when it took its present name. There were many such other esablishments surrounding the area both preceding and post-dating this time, giving alternate sustenance to those visiting the Minster. It's another York pub that's said to be haunted:
"The visible ghost is supposed to be a grey lady who appears as a blur. It is said to be the ghost of nun who gave birth and was punished by being bricked up in the walls of earlier church buildings which had stood there. She wanders through the pub and through nearby buildings searching for her baby."
There is also supposed to be a poltergeist, having the spirit of a playful child, which on one occassion tipped ashtrays over a landlady.
